A manual pallet truck, also known as a hand pallet jack or pump truck, is a simple yet essential piece of equipment designed for moving palletized loads over short distances on firm, level floors. Operated entirely by human power, it's the most fundamental and widely used type of pallet mover.
The operator positions the two thin, low-profile forks into the openings of a pallet. Using the long handle (tiller), they then pump it rhythmically up-and-down. This action engages a hydraulic pump, which lifts the forks and the pallet a few inches off the ground. Once lifted, the operator can easily pull or push the loaded truck to its destination. Lowering the load is controlled by a lever on the handle.
Key advantages include low cost, extreme durability requiring minimal maintenance, ease of use, and excellent maneuverability in tight spaces. It significantly reduces physical strain compared to dragging pallets. While best for shorter distances and lighter loads (typically up to 2,500 kg or 5,500 lbs) than electric versions, it remains indispensable in warehouses, retail stockrooms, docks, and smaller operations for loading/unloading and short transports.
